So we’re coming up to the end of January and how many of you are still sticking to your New Year resolutions?

Brilliant if you are but statistics indicate resolutions will be broken fairly quickly and most people by the end of the year have forgotten their resolutions.

So what is it that stops us achieving. What are our barriers to success? This isn’t just about New Year but in life in general. What are the things that really stop us achieving our goals. This is the same whether it’s a new business, losing weight, fitness goals or just doing the things you really want to do.

The next 5 headings are the most common reasons why people are not successful in the areas of life they want to be. Commonly known as excuses or barriers to success. We are brilliant at making excuses for ourselves and justifying within our own minds why we are not successful.

I haven’t got time:

This has to be the most common excuse I hear and the one my mind tricks me into believing as well.

This is the best way we like to talk ourselves out of things. It’s how we plant a barrier to success right in front of us. “I can’t set up my own business as I work every day and by the time I get home I’m too tired”, or “the kids need me I don’t have time”. I want you to have a look at the successful people in life. The ones who started their own business despite their families, the ones who worked 9-5 but wanted more from life, the successful athletes or footballers who found the time to train. These people never sat down after a day in the office or a day with the kids and said “I don’t have time”. They made time. They set themselves a weekly plan and spent some time, wherever they could, to achieve their goals.

A great example is those who run the marathon. This involves a heck of a lot of time to train. You know what your overall goal is so you break this down into smaller weekly goals and then daily goals. Write this down and then each day stick to it. Get up an hour earlier, run to to work, run at lunch, run home. You do have the time.

You can use this plan for everything you want in life. Setting up your own business, you know what you want to do, you break that down into years, months, weeks and then days and each day you do what you need to. By doing this your goal becomes more manageable and achievable.

Procrastination

My favorite barrier to success. This is the one thing I know I battle with. Commonly known as thinking, then thinking some more, then a bit more “oh I need a bit more time to think”. Before you know it you’ve thought about it so long it’s gone. The opportunity has passed you by and you carried on as normal wishing you could change your life.

Thoughts are great, positive thoughts are brilliant but without any action you will never change. You will never achieve those goals you want and you will always be left with the wondering.

Listening To Others

Most people’s natural disposition, especially here in the UK, is one of being cautious. We don’t want to be scammed and we don’t want to look foolish. We trust no one unless we know everything about them and then we will always find the expert who knew a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend who said never to do that. We spend so much time looking for the negative we won’t trust those who have clearly been successful. We’re told it won’t work so we believe it.

Why? Because it’s easier to stay in the comfort zone of all we have ever known. We like to be comfortable and we like to hear what fits into our knowledge group. For example those who are not property experts will tell you now is a terrible time to buy as the market is so flat. Those who have actually made money from property will say now is the best time to buy because of this very reason, but because our peers and families are those who are not property experts and we don’t personally know a successful property expert we go with the people we are comfortable with.

The best bit about this is we will then actively seek out a story to justify our decision. We’ll read the papers about someone who lost a fortune in property and sit back smugly on our chairs and go “see I knew I was right”.

Look at those who achieve. Did Richard Branson ever listen to those who said that won’t work. He has never made up a story to put a barrier to his success int he way of his dreams.

I Haven’t Got The Money.

If you want something badly enough you will find the money. If you have desire you will find a way. If you’re staring a new business maybe it will take some time to actually get financing but you will if you keep trying. don’t let this be a abrrier to your success. It doesn’t have to be if you don’t want it to.

If you don’t start because you haven’t got the money you never will. There are many ways to find finances, there are avenues open to everyone from clearing our the unused stuff in your garage and selling it on eBay. You have to actually do something otherwise you will never actually move towards your goal.

Giving Up

How many of us have started something and then given up when we didn’t succeed quickly. We all want a quick fix, an easy way to get fit, a fast plan to lose weight but then give it all up if we don’t see an instant result. Perseverance and desire is an absolute to achieving. With success you will encounter failure but once you over come failure will lead to success. Don’t let failure be a barrier to success.

You are the only one who will stop you achieving.

This article is about the Three Steps You Can Take To Be Successful.

Whatever you are doing and whatever you want to do there are certain steps you must take to achieve. If you are reading this wanting to be successful in life or you are reading this because you want to lose weight or have any sort of goal you are aiming for the principles are just the same.

These steps are the secret to your success, and the good news is, there is no secret.

I have been searching for an answer for a while to understand why some people appear to be more successful than others and can I achieve what I really want and what is it I really want. But after much research and frustration at times I believe these are the steps to success. More good news, the steps are free of charge. Now don’t get me wrong they come at a price but we all know there is nothing for free in life, no free lunch, no free ride and all the other cliches that go with the word free. But when you look at what this could bring you, when you truly understand the power of it all and the freedom this will give you, you will realise the price is worth paying. So just to keep adding to the good news again this does not require any monetary outlay by you. Please don’t misunderstand this because at some stage it will cost you but only when you are ready and you realise the monetary cost you invest is self investment. In fact until you realise this you won’t pay out any money any way.

So enough of my waffle lets get down to the  Steps To Success. Again I can’t take credit for this because this has been around for years and years but sometimes we all just need someone to go “hey I can make this simple for you”.

And I will, because sharing my new found knowledge and wealth is like having the keys to a brand new world, not one that shuns from sharing but realises giving is a way to succeed. It’s not one of the steps I’m covering today because I could probably write forever but these are the first of many steps but probably the most important ones to help you realise your goals or even your true potential. So for all of those of you who want to change in some way, shape or form lets go.

Step One

Write down what it is you want.

Now some people would call this goal setting but I don’t think we need to put a label on this step. What do you really want?. Is it to lose weight, be more positive, get a specific job, earn more money, follow a dream. Whatever it is write it down so it’s physical. Write it so you can see it and read it every single day.

Why? because you want to make it real, you want that goal, dream, ambition, desire, whatever you want to call it to be real. Because whilst it’s just in your head it’s a thought and when it’s on paper it’s a plan of sorts.

Step Two

Be determined, be dog determined, because you can bet your bottom dollar you will not get what you want at your first try and this my friends is one of the biggest reasons people don’t achieve what they want.

Lets look at this practically. You want to lose a stone, so you start dieting and all is going well and then you get invited out and the diet gets blown for one day. Now many people get to this stage and will go ok I’ll start again and they do. But then for some reason their plans get disrupted and the shopping they had planned doesn’t happen and they work late and they get home hungry, knowing they have nothing in the house to eat and I’m afraid they succumb to ease. So no problem you think I’ll start again. Now the people who keep starting again will eventually succeed but the truth is most people will go “oh I failed,  I’ll start again another time, life is just too busy at the moment.” Do they start again? I think we all know the answer to this question and it’s not just about losing weight.

The jogger who wants to run a marathon. They start the training but life becomes a little bit busy so a few runs get deferred and then a few more and then the marathon place get deferred to the next year and you know what the marathon never gets run because life just got in the way, the excuses became easier than the action.

We’ve all done it, I have, I procrastinate and make excuses as well as the next person, in fact we all probably spend more time finding reasons not to start or continue than we do to get on, pick ourselves up and follow the action through.

Be honest with yourself right now. How many of you have done the above. How many of you have purchased a set of DVDs or books and never used them, you know the ones learning anew language, the fitness DVD, how to complete a triathlon. I have loads of books like this, in fact I just sold my learn the guitar CDs as I’d had them for about 10 years and most were still in the wrapper!

Step Three

Be organised.

You see this is the one that gets missed out by so many people. This is the one which I know I keep missing. You see I can set my goals and I have my desire. I’ve done all the things I’ve read about and those in the know recommend but it suddenly dawned on me as I spent another couple of hours in front of the computer not really achieving very much. I’m not organised each day.

I’m organised in the fact I set time aside each night to work on my projects but i get side tracked so very easily by other things I read. I’m also not realistic, I think I have the knowledge to proceed with things when really they will take me a good few weeks to learn that next step.

The secret to this step is be organised. Write down each day what you are going to realistically achieve, what it is that day is going to bring to you.

If it’s weight lose write down what you are going to eat that day and stick to it. If it’s training know what you are going to do in that hour when you get home. If it’s trying to find a job or a new job write down what you will do, like write your CV or research for the role.

If you follow these steps and keep following them you will achieve your goals, you will move towards your dreams and you will be successful, for success is different to each one of us and never ever let anyone tell you your dreams aren’t worth following, because that is just not true.

The good news is Google Adsense is free. It’s a free tool you can easily access and download for free.

Once you have your web site or blog set up you can access Google Adsense to help monetise your site. So what exactly does this mean, well in essence Google are helping you to make money by free advertising on your site. The adverts are paid for by other people and when you sign up you agree Google can place ads on to your page.

Every time someone clicks on this ad you get a small fee.  It won’t make you a fortune to start with but it’s free and easy to set up. Their are ways of maximising Adsense but for now we’ll just look at the basics.

If you have a Google Blog you can access Adsense directly through your dashboard, if you have a word press blog there are many widgets already set up for this or you can create your own plugin by following the step by step guide they come with.

The simplest way to set up Adsense is to set up a Google account, again this is free. Once you have done this put Adsense into the  search box on your tool bar and you will be taken to the Adsense page. Follow the directions and you will see you can customise how you want the ads to look. I personally don’t change anything unless I really need to, just keep clicking next until you get to the end. You will then be given a code , just copy this by pressing Ctrl + a and Ctrl + c or use your right mouse button to do this.

Now go back to your site and the dashboard and click on widgets. Drag the text box over to the sidebars and then paste your text into the box. This will take about 10 minutes to show up but once it’s there you are all set to make money when anyone clicks on the advert.
The really clever bit is google will match the ads to whatever keywords appear on your site so they look natural and if they should be there.

Before you read on I want you to focus on what you want to achieve and why. Are you looking to change your job, create your own business, lose weight or run a marathon. It may even be a simple as you’ve reached a dead end and you want to change. but there is something in your life right now that has made you click onto this article. You want to change.

So why don’t you, what is stopping you from achieving those goals, from losing that weight, from writing your poem, or changing your job. Answer: YOU. You are the greatest barrier to achieving your goals. Your mind looks at the obstacles involved and finds excuses not to do anything. You go to work and think “there must be more to life than this”, but do you change. No because it’s safe, it pays your bills, it allows you to go out for a meal or a beer at the weekend, it pays for your two week holiday each year but you are bored bored bored. Sound familiar. You want to lose weight but your lack of confidence prevents you doing this. You want to start but don’t know how so you continue the life style you know because it’s comfortable for you, because you can’t remember what it was like before. Your mind will talk you out of changing.

Two words will change your life forever.

We all have dreams, everyone of us, we all want to achieve, whether it’s to be a good parent or a good friend, or get a job or a skill. Even those of us who lack ambition want to achieve something. For most of us there are generally two things that stop us achieving. Confidence and action. Think about it. Do you want to lose weight? What stops you? What don’t you do? I’m guessing the answers are in some way, shape or form are you lack the confidence to try i.e. you’d feel self conscious turning up at a gym or buying a fitness magazine in a shop so you don’t do anything about it, you take no action and nothing changes. You can apply this to a whole host of things from weight lose to becoming a marathon runner. The thing that prevents us achieving our goals are us. It’s the way we think.

Look at Mr Bolt the world record sprinter, he has confidence,he has belief and he achieves. Richard Branson, read his book Screw It Let’s Do It. Those people look for ways to achieve their goals, they don’t look for the excuses to not even start.

Whether you want to be famous or rich, get employed, lose weight improve a skill, anything take some action today. Today is the start of the rest of your life……….ENJOY IT.

Each of us has the ability to make a difference in other people’s lives. There are times in our own lives when we need other people to come along and make a difference to us and there are times when we actually don’t feel we can make a difference. This might be because we aren’t feeling on top of our game or things aren’t quite how we want them to be in life.

For whatever reason we often forget we really can make a difference. My article today is a short story of what happenend to me today.

Today was a great day. You see today I made a difference, today I had the opportunity to meet someone I would never normally meet and to have an influence on their life.

Today I was given an experience, which not only changed someone elses life but also mine. I was able to experience the rare feeling of really making a difference.

It doesn’t matter who it was or how it happened the important thing is I put myself into a situation where it would happen. I allowed myself to take an opportunity where I could make a difference and I was open enough to reflect and analyse and discuss the importance of today with some great teachers, who may not even have known they were teaching me.

I have been incredibly lucky as I have felt the incredible high, the incredible sense of achievement that ultimately goes with making a difference.

Wow you might say how much did you spend, what did you do? In two simple words it cost me my time and I listened. That is it, nothing more and nothing less but in this crazy 24/7 world we live in this was all that was needed to change a persons life hopefully forever and certainly mine for a very long time.

Many rich people give their money and time to charity whilst most of us will give occasionally or will help out every now and again, but each day we can make a difference. Each day we could take 5-10 minutes of our time to make a difference to someone else, a smile, holding the door open, thanking someone. These are all just small things, which if we did would help us see the difference we could make to someone else. They are the simple things in life we forget when we are rushing around getting to work or looking after the kids or living our day to day lives, but it doesn’t have to be this way. All of us have time to give to someone else, all of us can take 5 minutes of our lives each day to stop and really listen and really see what is going on in our lives. If you share your time and if you try to make a difference for just 5 minutes once a week you will be incredibly surprised at how good this makes you and the other person feel.

You have a gift, share your gift with others.

Today I made a difference, tomorrow will be the same.

We have a hunger of the mind which asks for knowledge of all around us, and the more we gain, the more is our desire; the more we see, the more we are capable of seeing.

So they are 5 steps for you to take. But it’s important for you to remember you must take action and get started. you may have some great ideas but until you put them onto the web no one will know. Practise as you go and it will get easier but you must take those first steps.

Google have devloped an advertising system where you can pay for you site to be advertised on the main page of a search page.

It’s called Google Ads. If you carry out a serach say for Yoga  and look in the right hand column you will see the title “sponsored links”. These are Google Ads.

How do they Work?

Google doesn’t charge you a fixed rate and then you wait a bit and then your ad is shown, it works on what is known as a pay epr click schme. Every time someone clicks on your advert you pay Google the amount agreed.

How Do Google Ads Work Out The Fee?

This is where keywords become really important. If you remember keywords are the words which the search engines spiders use to find your site and advertise it to the world. When you apply for Google Ads you bid on keywords to promote you to the first page of the search engine. For example if you are advertising products for Yoga, this is a popular search phrase and these keywords will be quite high in  the bidding war. The more obvious the keyword, the more expensive the pay per click. You could end up paying a higher rate but have no conversions, costing you in the long run.

This is where you need to think “outside the box” and put your self in the customers shoes. Research other words your customer will sue to find your product. Google has free tools to assist with this and you can see what words people are suing to find your product. Lets look at our Yoga example. 100 people search on Yoga  costing you £10 per click. 2% of them buy a mat at £10 a mat, over one month you spend £1000 and make £200. You narrow the keywords down to Indian Yoga Mats. This is more specific and people using this search are looking for a particular brand you are selling. You only get 50 searches but because your keywords are more specific they cost you less say £2.50 per click but you sell to 40% of your customers. You spend £125 but make £200.

The key to Google Ads is research into the area of your topic, thinking laterally around the different sorts of words people will use to search for your product, and cashing in on the niche market searching specifically for a product you are selling.

What is goal setting?

Goal setting is working out what you want to achieve and how you are going to do this. Sometimes this will seem like an impossible task but if you break down those goals into small segments they will seem much more achievable. Lets look at an example. You want to leave your job and set up your business full time but you only have 2 hours per night to work on your Internet business. You know how much you earn now and how much you need to earn to leave your job. Some people call this your financially free target. Rather than thinking “Oh my I will never earn that”, and give up before you began you can break it down into achievable bites.

You set a plan of what you will achieve  the next year, which could be as simple as I want my website up and running and I want to be making £100 per month. Then you need to break this down further into months. So for example this month I will research my product and set up my website and then break this down into weeks. So start with Monday; check the main sites for my product; Tuesday look at other people’s blogs; Wednesday research keywords on sites similar to mine, and so on.

This will take commitment on your part but unless you make this change and start setting goals you will never leave where you are now.

Entrepreneurs often talk about taking action and setting goals is a great way to start. Look at where you really want to be, believe you can be there and start making goals. If it helps print off the house or the car you want to have and set it as your screen saver or put a picture on your wall.
